This is one of the most common statements we hear in our office. We usually believe that if we feel fine, everything must really be fine. Well, as time proves, those little fender benders usually do cause damage to our bodies.
As you know, our bones are held together but a network of muscles, tendons, and ligaments.When the muscles are injured, they get tiny tears and don’t heal with the original high quality muscle fibers. The scar tissue that forms is a big mess compared to our original tissue. It doesn’t have the same flexibility or strength. Whichever joints are being supported by the injured tissue are not going to function normally henceforth. This leads to arthritis and other problems. If the tendons or ligaments are damaged, the situation is substantially worse even when there is no pain. Those structures don’t have lots of blood vessels and therefore take much longer to heal. They too will not return back to their pre-injury condition.
When you receive chiropractic adjustments while scar tissue is forming, the healing is much improved. The typical “messy” formation can be more “organized” and able to work more like the original muscle tissue.
I cannot recommend strongly enough that chiropractic care should be incorporated for every person who has had injuries and it should start right away. There are volumes of research and clinical articles explaining that scar tissue starts forming within 48 hours of an injury if not sooner. The earlier we start to organize the pattern of the scar tissue, the better the outcome. It’s always unfortunate when someone comes to me for pain that started for no apparent reason a year or two after an injury and we discover spinal degeneration that very likely could have been reduced and sometimes probably prevented.
