Should Pain Q & A
How does my shoulder work?
Your shoulder is a unique ball-and-socket joint. It’s made up of your shoulder blade, upper arm bone, and collarbone — scapula, humerus, and clavicle, respectively. The upper part of your arm bone fits snugly into the rounded socket of your shoulder blade.
With the help of soft tissues, like tendons, muscles, and ligaments, your arm moves about in every direction, without ever leaving the socket. All of those soft tissues that help with your arm movements make up your rotator cuff. Since you have so many soft tissues tucked away in your shoulder socket, even the slightest injury can leave you in severe pain.
What types of shoulder problems can occur?
Your shoulder is a complex joint, so you can run into issues with bones or any of the soft tissues inside. Shoulder pain generally comes from either:
- Inflammation of your tendons
- Shoulder instability
Sometimes, shoulder pain is a combination of these issues. Shoulder tendons, which connect muscle to bone, can wear down over time since they’re constantly being stretched and pulled over hard bones. If you use your shoulder a lot, from playing sports, for instance, you can have an acute case of tendinitis.
It’s also possible that arthritis or other degenerative diseases can damage your tendons, leaving you with chronic tendinitis. When you have rotator cuff problems, one (or more) of the four tendons that keep your shoulder in the socket, wear down or tears. Your shoulder becomes unstable and causes constant pain. During your initial consultation, Dr. Meyer will look over any medical reports or images you have with you. He’ll also likely take a new X-ray to get a current view of your shoulder joint, so he can properly diagnose and treat your shoulder pain.
Will I be able to get treatment for shoulder pain?
Yes! As an overall wellness practitioner and expert chiropractor, Dr. Meyer will work with you to get you through your shoulder pain in the most natural way possible. He’ll probably have you come into the office several times per week for chiropractic adjustments, which help realign your skeleton and improve your body’s ability to heal itself.
Often, he combines adjustments with healing soft tissue therapies such as cold laser, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and heat or ice packs. Most patients have improvement in their pain levels shortly after their first treatment.
