Migraine Q & A
What are the symptoms of migraines?
Migraines are a specific type of headache caused by brain changes. You’ll have severe pain, often on one side of your head, that leaves you extremely sensitive to smells, lights, or sounds. Many migraine sufferers also complain of nausea, or even throwing up. You could have eye pain that makes it difficult for you to focus. In severe cases, these symptoms can last as long as two to three days.
Are migraines the same as headaches?
All migraines are headaches, but not all headaches are migraines. Most of the headaches men and women deal with on a routine basis are tension headaches. These can be caused by straining your neck, clenching your jaws, or focusing for too long on your computer, for example. Tension headaches can certainly be painful, but often the pain is manageable and resolves itself on its own in a few hours. Because migraine headaches, in particular, are caused by a chemical change in your brain, their causes and symptoms are usually different than other headaches.
Can migraine headaches be managed?
Yes. Dr. Meyer will work with you to put together a treatment plan that ideally helps prevent the onset of migraines, and/or decreases the severity of your symptoms. Depending on your symptoms, part of your treatment plan could include manual chiropractic adjustments. These sessions help restore your body’s natural energy flow and nerve communication while getting your spine aligned and relieving pain.
Dr. Meyer has extensive training in wellness and preventative medicine. He can run laboratory tests to see if you have a nutritional issue that could be worsening your migraine issues. For instance, chronic migraine sufferers often have low magnesium levels or certain vitamin B imbalances. Dr. Meyer can determine if taking specialized dietary supplements can prevent or resolve some of your headache pain.
His caring team can teach you relaxation techniques to get you through bad migraine spells or provide massage therapy sessions to relieve any built up tension. You could also benefit from regular soft tissue treatments to improve healing, including ultrasound therapy.
