Carpal Tunnel Q & A

What is carpal tunnel?

Your wrist is filled with several tiny bones, tendons, ligaments, and muscles that allow you to move your hand. Right down the middle of your forearm, you have a small space where your median nerve and several tendons run down. This is your carpal tunnel. When you stress that area or have an injury, it puts pressure on the median nerve. Since this nerve controls movement and feeling in your thumb and first three fingers, you’ll feel pain or tingling with almost every hand or wrist movement.

Can I have carpal tunnel pain even if I did not have an injury?

Yes. Anytime your carpal tunnel has pressure or swelling around it, you’ll probably have pain; While having sudden trauma, like a slip and fall can certainly cause this to happen, injuries aren’t always the reasoning behind carpal tunnel pain. You can have carpal tunnel syndrome that’s caused by:

  • Diabetes
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Pregnancy

It’s also possible, and quite common to have carpal tunnel problems if you constantly make the same hand movements. If you type daily, for example, the strain on your carpal tunnel and median nerve can cause swelling, leaving you in pain.

Which types of treatments are best for carpal tunnel syndrome?

Dr. Meyer will work with you to determine which types of treatments are best for your specific condition. It’s likely that you’ll need several different treatments to help ease your pain and strengthen your wrist. When Dr. Meyer puts together your treatment plan, it could include manual chiropractic adjustments several times per week. While you might not realize it, having a misalignment in your spine might be further causing some of your wrist pain. You’ll continue to get relief with each adjustment, and your body will be in a better position to heal itself.

Your plan will probably include some ultrasound therapy, too. Ultrasound delivers high-intensity waves to soft tissues beneath your skin. This increases the temperature of the soft tissue, which not only reduces pain, it promotes natural healing. Dr. Meyer and his team will spend time teaching you strengthening and conditioning exercises to help with carpal tunnel syndrome. They’ll monitor you in the office to ensure that you’re doing them correctly, then send you home with an exercise plan to continue the movements between appointments.
